This lapis lazuli pendant in the shape of a sea creature’s tail is suspended using the ancient jewellery-making technique of wire wrapping.

Porphyrios was a historical whale that lived off the coast of Constantinople in the 6th Century. The huge creature, a source of significant distress for Byzantine seafarers, maintained its activity for more than five decades. Emperor Justinian I regarded its capture as a matter of utmost importance, yet he struggled to devise a viable method for accomplishing this feat. The whale's name, referencing the imperial purple, served as an indication of the profound esteem in which it was held.

Each pendant is hand carved, assembled and slightly unique. These are a limited edition item, which once sold out will not return.
